I seem to have a web page set as the back ground with scroll bars showing at the side, I don’t remember how it got there, but I’d really like to remove it. How do I do this?
This is caused by a part of Windows XP that works like a basic version of the Gadgets found in Windows Vista and Windows 7. It lets you display a web page on your desktop. Web pages are better viewed in a browser though, and your computer’s performance will be affected if lots of web pages are open on the desktop. These web page settings will also override any wallpaper settings.
To get rid of the page on your desktop, left-click on the page itself. This will cause a border to appear around it, with an X in the top-right corner. Click the X to close the page.
You can also disable it by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting properties to bring up the Display Properties window. Open the Desktop tab and click Customize Desktop. A Window will appear called Desktop Items. Click the Web tab, and you should see a list of pages that are set to appear on your desktop. Click each box to remove the ticks, or highlight each item and click Delete.
I did actually end up fixing someone’s computer once, which had www.supplementing.com stuck as a background. Not too hard to fix the problem once you know what’s going on.
