I’ve got an image of a famous actress and I’d like to figure out who it is. Can you recommend a reverse image search facility?

It’s great that you’ve heard of a reverse image search because that’s exactly what you need. This is a special type of website where you can specify an image and be pointed at websites where you can find this image and others like it. The website I would recommend is one called TinEye which searches through over 2 billion images.

All you need to do is upload your image, or specify there URL where it can be found and the site returns with a number of places where it can be found. The result looks something like this:

You can use this to find anything you like, whether it’s actresses, wholesale jewelry at bajulimports or even pictures of livestock. Check it out!

I’m having problems filling in CAPTCHAs on forms. Is there anything you can recommend to make it easier?

The scrambled letters used in Captcha security boxes are sometimes rather difficult to read. You can however make them bigger which makes them easier to decipher without having to cycle through images until you find one you can understand.

In Internet Explorer, hold down the Ctrl key and press +. It doesn’t matter if you use the one on the numerical keyboard or the one next to the backspace key. Every time you press this combination, the web page will get bigger.

To restore the webpage to its normal size, you can either press Ctrl and – as many times as you pressed Ctrl and + or press Ctrl and 0 (not on the numerical keypad) to reset to the normal view.

You can also change the zoom level through the Internet Explorer window. Click on the gear in the top right-hand corner of the window, Zoom and then select a zoom level. So next time you’re filling in that form for your flower delivery, you can get the CAPTCHA right!

I’ve recently started using Pinterest and I’m really enjoying sharing my pics. Recently someone has been posting some unsavory pics and I’d like to stop following them. Haven’t figured out how to do that though. Any tips?

Pinterest is a great new medium for sharing photos and it’s actually one of the fastest growing websites ever at the moment. There is a tiny trick you need to know about unfollowing someone though, so let’s see how we can do that.

First of all, let’s have a look at all the people you follow. In order to do this, you need to click on your own name and you’ll be taken to a profile page. In the top right you’ll see a message that looks like: 52 followers 52 following, showing how many people you’re following and how many follow you. Click on the word “following” and you’ll be taken to a screen showing everyone you’re following that looks a bit like this:

Now here’s the thing. Do you see those greyed out “Unfollow” buttons next to the profiles. They’re not actually greyed out! You can click on these to unfollow the person, so go ahead, find the person you want to unfollow and click the button. You’ll be rid of his postings forever!

You can now go back to posting photos of your jewelry deals of the day, your favourite cat photos or anything else you fancy, without having to worry about pics you’re not happy to see.

Hope this helped.

Once upon a time, I typed in the wrong URL for a website and now IE9 keeps suggesting it to me from the moment I get past the ‘www’. bit. I’ve tried deleting my history, but it still won’t go away. Where is Internet Explorer getting these frozen-in-time website names from and how do I erase them?

Along with several other aspects of Windows, Internet Explorer is integrated with the operating system’s indexing and search tools – and this includes browsing history.

In other words, even if you use the option to delete browsing history from within Internet Explorer, websites that you’ve visited in the past may remain in Windows’ own search index so that they appear as ‘auto-completed’ suggestions next time they’re typed, even in part – just as you’ve experienced.

There are a couple of ways to stop this. Within Internet Explorer, first click Tools and choose Internet Options. Now click the Content tab and click the Settings button in the AutoComplete section. In the dialogue box that appears, click to remove the tick from the ‘Use Windows Search for better results’ box and then click OK.

That will stop Internet Explorer from attempting to auto-complete typed websites but it won’t actually remove visited websites from the search index (so if this feature is ever re-enabled, the problem will return).

So, to stop Windows from adding websites you visit to its search engine, in Vista click Start followed by Control Panel, then click the System and Maintenance link followed by Indexing Options. Finally, click to remove the ticks from alongside the Internet Explorer History entry (or entries) and click OK. Now next time you want to go to Cleopatras Choice makeup you’re sure to end up in the right place

I have collected numerous unneeded and unwanted toolbars across the top of my internet screen. I would like to be able to delete some of them but although they seem very good at telling me how useful they are, they are hopeless at telling me how to get rid of them.

I’ve found that if I press the F11 key this clears them temporarily but I then lose the ability to see the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Can you help?

Unwanted toolbars like these are adept at working their way into web browsers, apparently uninvited. In fact, in many cases they arrive as part of other software that you have voluntarily installed.

A program’s installation wizard may have included a discreet tick box that signalled your agreement to install this, that or the other browser toolbar. By failing to click to remove the tick (understandable, as you may not even have noticed it), the program goes ahead and adds a toolbar.

Though some can be helpful – such as the Google Toolbar – others are just plain annoying and serve mainly to benefit the developer (through data collection, advertising medical carts and other bits or both). Pressing F11 switches the browser into fullscreen mode: this effectively hides the toolbars (and everything else, as you’ve discovered), but doesn’t disable or remove them.

Fortunately, in most cases disabling and/or removing browser toolbars is straightforward. You didn’t tell us anything about your computer, so we don’t know which web browser or operating system you’re using. However, we’ll guess that it will be a Windows PC and that you’re using Internet Explorer.

Assuming this is the case, then to disable (and thus hide) a toolbar, open the Tools menu (or click the Tools button), point to Toolbars and click to remove the tick from the offender. Repeat for each toolbar you’d like to hide.

Versions of Internet Explorer 6 onwards (so any edition released in the past decade) can also run add-ons, some of which may also affect the browser in unwanted or otherwise annoying ways.

To view and manage installed add-ons, click the Tools menu and choose Manage Add-ons (in versions earlier than Internet Explorer 8 you will also need to click Enable or Disable Add-ons from the submenu).

The precise appearance of and options available in the Manage Add-ons window that appears varies between browser versions, but usually you can click on an entry for more information and click the Disable (or Enable) button as appropriate.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you want instructions for a different browser.

I have recently upgraded from Internet Explorer 8 to 9. Unfortunately, I am now unable view my British Gas online account because, I’m told, its website is not compatible with IE9. Do you have any suggestions?

Such problems are seldom due to a genuine incompatibility between a certain version of a web browser and a website. Much more likely is that the website is performing a check and has failed to recognise the new version of the browser you’re using.

If this check can be bypassed, the site usually works perfectly well. To this end, some web browsers offer the ability to change something known as the ‘user agent string’ – this is a little bit of code that identifies the web browser to visited websites. It’s presented to any website you visit, whether it’s http://www.redenvelope.com/personalized-gifts-rprsl or British Gas.

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer does not – at least not by default. There are ways to change IE’s user agent string by editing the Windows Registry, but I wouldn’t recommend messing with this unless you knew what you were doing.

My main recommendation would be to contact the owner of the website. As more and more people start using a new browser, this problem will need to be corrected and the more pressure clients put on them, the quicker they will get their web team to resolve the issue. In the meantime, there are a number of alternative browser, like Firefox or Chrome that can tide you over.

I’ve been working on a manuscript for a novel for some time and would love to know if there’s any way to publish my book online. Any recommendations?

Hi there. I’ve just been through the process recently for my father, who writes books in Maltese and has been wanting to turn his work into eBooks. One thing that is not clear in your question is whether you want to publish an eBook or a printed book; but I have a solution for you that enables you to do both (or either if you prefer).

The platform I used is called Lulu and here’s a short video about what it does:

The process is pretty simple and the site will walk you through it. You upload your manuscript, design your cover and pick a number of options along the way. Publishing is free, with Lulu collecting a commission on any sales. The end result is a printed book or one you can load in your favourite ebook reader. I’ve found it quite intuitive and would recommend you give it a try!

I know that you can stuff cheaper online and I’m looking around for a pair of glasses. I’ve looked around and came across a whole bunch of websites. Is there any one you recommend?

As you say, there are a number of sites out there offering good prices for specs. There is one that keeps popping out at me though, a site called Zenni Optical where you can get a great selection of prescription eye glasses for a pretty good price. For example, check out this pair which cost less than $10:

Now that’s a pretty awesome price for a pair of specs and I think they look quite good, don’t you? Well, I like them, but if you don’t there are a whole selection of different prescription glasses to choose from.

Even though the specs above cost under $10, this includes anti-scratch coating, thin lenses and UV protection. They even come with a free case and a microfibre cleaning cloth. Shipping to the U.S. will be under $5 or $10 for International Shipping. Which means that you can get your specs for next to nothing.

The website also has this really cool feature where you can upload your photo and try on different specs to see what they look like. It’s called Zenni Frame Fit and lets you virtually try on all the glasses you want. Pretty neat I thought.

My cousin’s been talking about a poker game called Texas Holdem. He’s watching a lot of poker on TV and would really like to learn how to play so he can take part in tournaments (like he’s going to retire off his winnings right?). Where can he learn more about it?

First of all, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that very few people actually play poker professionally and you really should make sure your cousin gets that message. Sure, there are a few people who excel at the game, but for most of us it’s just a pastime.

Obviously, the first thing he would need to do is learn the ins and out of the game. There’s a great page on PokerStar’s website that explains the ins and outs of the game as well as how different variations on the game work. For example, there’s Limit Texas Hold’em, No Limit Texas Hold’em, Pot Limit Texas Hold’em and Mixed Texas Hold’em; all variations which are explained on the page.

Now, here’s the great bit. Once he’s got his head around the rules, he can actually play for free on the site until he’s familiar with the rules and is ready for a real game. The site works with a download that provides a great experience, and he’ll to play with people from around the world. It’s a great way to learn all the different innuendoes of the game, learn from experience and also pick up some tips from people who have been playing the game for some time. Poker is very much like everything else, it takes knowing the rules and gaining as much experience as you can get to get as good as you can ever be. All you need is some information and a place to stretch your wings.

Hi there. I’m a bit fan of poker and organise a weekly tournament at my house with some friends. My French cousin is coming to visit and I’d like him to join us but I’m not sure how skilful is is. I know that there are poker tutorials on the Poker Stars website, but his English isn’t all that great. Is there anywhere you can recommend where he could learn?

Poker isn’t one of my strong points, but the Internet is. I had a quick look around at the Poker Stars website and found that they have a French site which your cousin could use to learn how to play. I didn’t realise, but poker is perfectly legal in France, which is probably why Poker Stars have a regional site where it’s all in French.

Besides tutorials, I found out that Poker Stars also lets you play as much as you like using Play Money. So, not only can he learn how to play, but he can also play with different people around the world. If he’s playing with play money then he has nothing to lose and he can play as much as he likes. I know that playing with real money is more exciting, but if he’s not that familiar with the game it makes sense to play as much as he can before he puts real money on the table.

So, that’s the plan then. Introduce him to the French site, get him to go through all the tutorials they have available there, and then tell him to play as much as he can without spending any cash. He probably wants to try and play with real money before playing with the lot of you; but at least he can get his act together to provide you with a real challenge. Wish him luck from me!
