I’ve been getting into trouble with the missus lately because of the mess of cables I seem to leave wherever I go. Now, they aren’t really all that messy because I use cable ties to keep the clutter to a minimum, but the wife insists they look ugly and I have to find a better solution. Any suggestions?

Cables can be the bane of your life. Wifi has gone a long way to easing the issue, but until we have an effective way to transmit electricity wireless, we’re still going to have a cable nest wherever there’s a collection of gadget.

One suggestion would be to use some sort of cable manager, cable tray or cable raceway. This would make your cable problem much neater as the cables are hidden from sight. They can be accessed if needed, but when they’re not, they can be hidden away neatly in a way that would solve your marital conflict.

Does this work for you?

I’ve got an image of a famous actress and I’d like to figure out who it is. Can you recommend a reverse image search facility?

It’s great that you’ve heard of a reverse image search because that’s exactly what you need. This is a special type of website where you can specify an image and be pointed at websites where you can find this image and others like it. The website I would recommend is one called TinEye which searches through over 2 billion images.

All you need to do is upload your image, or specify there URL where it can be found and the site returns with a number of places where it can be found. The result looks something like this:

You can use this to find anything you like, whether it’s actresses, wholesale jewelry at bajulimports or even pictures of livestock. Check it out!

I’ve been with my current web host for a few years now, however recently I’ve noticed that performance of my sites has started to suffer. Websites that used to load effortlessly now take a few seconds to display a page. I’ve tried contact support to see if they could help, but so far, there’s been no improvement. What’s the best way to choose a good web host?

If you give a quick search for a web hosts you’re bound to find hundreds of different providers, all offering vaguely similar products, some standing out from the others. But the question is, how do you decide the best one to select? Personally the one thing I would recommend is checking out some Web Hosting Reviews.

The thing about reviews is that it gives you an idea of what sort of experience someone else has had. Any company can set up a glitzy website, but this really gives little indication of what service you are going to receive. On the other hand, a truthful review can lay the road for a long and fruitful relationship. So, for example, if you’re interested in InMotion Hosting, then reading all about them can tell you what experiences other people have had.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Web Hosting is a dark art. Far from it, technology has advanced to a point now where it’s pretty much a commodity. However, aspects like customer service and site performance can be hard to gauge before you part with your hard earned cash. Getting a real recommendation from someone who uses the service can be fundamental in selecting a web host that will last a long time.

What do you think? Does this seem like a great way to pick a web host or not?

The scrambled letters used in Captcha security boxes are sometimes rather difficult to read. You can however make them bigger which makes them easier to decipher without having to cycle through images until you find one you can understand.

In Internet Explorer, hold down the Ctrl key and press +. It doesn’t matter if you use the one on the numerical keyboard or the one next to the backspace key. Every time you press this combination, the web page will get bigger.

To restore the webpage to its normal size, you can either press Ctrl and – as many times as you pressed Ctrl and + or press Ctrl and 0 (not on the numerical keypad) to reset to the normal view.

You can also change the zoom level through the Internet Explorer window. Click on the gear in the top right-hand corner of the window, Zoom and then select a zoom level. So next time you’re filling in that form for your flower delivery, you can get the CAPTCHA right!

Facebook recently changed the way it displays photos and shows them with a black background now. Is there any way I can switch it back to the old-style white background one?

I’ve heard this question before. Personally I prefer the older way too, though the new style has it’s benefits. You know how it is with preferences, you can even find someone who likes Wall Water Fountains!

It’s actually pretty simple to switch back to the original display. All you need to do is press F5 while viewing a picture with the black background. This will refresh the page and show you the picture with it’s white background. Enjoy!

Recently, my computer has begun displaying a couple of error messages each time it starts up. This is pretty annoying, how can I stop it?

These messages can rise from a variety of reasons, from programs that haven’t been uninstalled correctly, to something that’s faulty all the way to some malicious program which is making it’s presence felt. My first suggestion would be to check that your antivirus is up to date and to make sure you’re not running any spyware.

Let’s examine the case where there’s a program running that shouldn’t be, (make sure you’re comfortable on your seat cushion and away we go!) maybe you thought you uninstalled it, or not longer need it to run on start up. To disable it, click Start followed by Run, type msconfig into the Run box and hit Enter. In the System Configuration Utility that appears, click the Startup tab and scroll through the list.

The Location column, incidentally, shows where on the hard disk it resides, which might help identify the responsible application.

To stop the offending file from launching with Windows, click to remove the tick alongside its entry and then click OK. You’ll be prompted to restart Windows in order for the changes to take effect – click the Restart button to do so.

Hope this helps!

I’m putting together a website as a school project, which shows the results you got in each subject. I’d like my table to be sortable so that a user can select which column to sort on, just like Excel. How do I do this in HTML?

Well, HTML on it’s own isn’t going to cut it this time. HTML is a language that you use to define what goes into a web page, but it doesn’t allow for the sort of dynamic transitions you’re talking about. For this, you need to start looking into Javascript, or even better, one of my favourite libraries: jQuery.

In fact, there’s a plugin for jQuery called Tablesorterwhich will do just what you’re talking about. To use the tablesorter plugin, include the jQuery library and the tablesorter plugin inside the <head> tag of your HTML document:

<script type="text/javascript" src="/path/to/jquery-latest.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="/path/to/jquery.tablesorter.js"></script>

Start by telling tablesorter to sort your table when the document is loaded:

$(document).ready(function()
{
$("#myTable").tablesorter();
}
);

Click on the headers and you’ll see that your exam tables are now sortable! You’ll have to make sure that your table uses THEAD and TBODY tags, but that should be pretty standard if you’re building your HTML correctly.

Download Tablesorter here

Ubuntu is one of the fast-growing favourite Linux distros out there and it’s been fun to see more and more questions present themselves. The thing to remember about Ubuntu is that it’s just Linux under the covers and widening your search for an answer usually gets you where you want to go.

In this case, just drop to your command line and type adduser <username> . Your machine will then walk you through a set of questions asking you to specify things like password, home directory, etc. Pretty easy once you know how. And don’t forget to keep your passwords strong. Using dictionary words, even one as obscure as myoripped, could mean that your new account could easily be compromised. Always remember to add some numbers and play around with case with it.

Good luck!

I’ve recently started using Pinterest and I’m really enjoying sharing my pics. Recently someone has been posting some unsavory pics and I’d like to stop following them. Haven’t figured out how to do that though. Any tips?

Pinterest is a great new medium for sharing photos and it’s actually one of the fastest growing websites ever at the moment. There is a tiny trick you need to know about unfollowing someone though, so let’s see how we can do that.

First of all, let’s have a look at all the people you follow. In order to do this, you need to click on your own name and you’ll be taken to a profile page. In the top right you’ll see a message that looks like: 52 followers 52 following, showing how many people you’re following and how many follow you. Click on the word “following” and you’ll be taken to a screen showing everyone you’re following that looks a bit like this:

Now here’s the thing. Do you see those greyed out “Unfollow” buttons next to the profiles. They’re not actually greyed out! You can click on these to unfollow the person, so go ahead, find the person you want to unfollow and click the button. You’ll be rid of his postings forever!

You can now go back to posting photos of your jewelry deals of the day, your favourite cat photos or anything else you fancy, without having to worry about pics you’re not happy to see.

Hope this helped.

I have a desktop PC on which I have installed both Windows XP and the Ubuntu operating system. Until recently Windows XP was set as the default operating system, starting automatically 10 seconds after the computer was switched on. Recently, though, I was invited to upgrade to Ubuntu 11, which I did, and now Ubuntu is set as the default operating system (again starting automatically after 10 seconds). I can select Windows XP but I want to reset the boot menu so that Windows XP is shown as the default operating system. How can I do this?

switching things around so that Windows becomes the default operating system should be pretty straightforward. First, click the Software Centre icon on the left and search for and install ‘StartUp-Manager’, typing in your password when prompted.

Now launch Startup-Manager (click the Ubuntu icon at the top left, type StartUp-Manager and click the icon when it appears). Finally, on the Boot options tab, open the dropdown menu below the ‘Default operating system’ heading, choose your Windows XP installation and click Close.

Next time the PC is started, Windows should start automatically. That wasn’t hard at all, certainly easier than finding a shop that sells high school class rings that’s open after 5:00pm!
