I love my iPod, it goes everywhere I go, but the one thing I hate is the tangled headphone wires I have to keep sorting out. I have a Bluetooth headset, but I haven’t figured out how to activate Bluetooth on the iPod. Any ideas?

The reason you can’t activate Bluetooth on your iPod is that it just doesn’t have Bluetooth capability. I know that most devices nowadays have this sort of functionality build in, but iPod’s just don’t. Having said that, just because it doesn’t have it built in doesn’t mean you can’t add it on.

This is where the Motorola D650 Bluetooth adapter for Ipod comes in. It’s a small device that connects to your iPod via the bottom connector and gives it the capability to talk to Bluetooth devices just like your headphones. It’s easy to use and doesn’t require any batteries or a power connection. It just grabs its juice from your iPod so literally all you have to do is plug it in and you can listen to your music collection anywhere you like. It’s on sale from Buy.com for under $18.00, so it’s not particularly expensive.

Once you have the Bluetooth connection you can connect to a variety of devices, your Bluetooth headset, even a Bluetooth connection in your car so you can listen to your songs while you drive. I think this just fits the bill for you!

I’ve got a new Smartphone with all the bells and whistles you can get. One of the things I should be able to do is to transfer photos by Bluetooth, but although I can activate this on my phone, I can’t seem to find the option on my computer. How do I turn my Bluetooth on?

I’m afraid this question is a bit hard to answer without having more specific information on your computer. First of all you need to make sure that your Bluetooth is activated. Soe laptops have an option in their BIOS settings to turn this off and on and if it’s not activated then Windows won’t know that the laptop has this capability. If this is activated, check your Device Manager in Windows to make sure Windows has the right drivers for the device as without these your Bluetooth won’t work.

Some laptops just don’t have the capability, so the first thing you need to do is make sure you have a Bluetooth device that you can use. You can buy these quite cheaply; one such device is the Kensington Bluetooth USB Micro Adapter which is currently on sale from Buy.com at around $12.00 The great thing about it is that it’s really tiny and an fit into a USB port without taking up too much space (see image on the right). Once it’s in, Windows should recognise it and automatically install the correct drivers for you. Enjoy!

I give a lot of PowerPoint presentation, but find that I always have to hand around my laptop so I can move from one slide to the next. I’ve recently started running around with a wireless mouse in my hand, but it just doesn’t feel right. Is there a better way to control my presentation?

I have been known to use the wireless mouse trick from time to time, but always get confused which button to press to advance the slide. What I can suggest is a purpose-built device, the Kensington K33374 Device Remote Control.

It consists of a small device that sits in the palm of your hand and gives you the ability to control your presentation from anywhere in the room. It’s a radio device as opposed to an infrared one, so doesn’t require line-of-sight between the device and the receiver. The receiver is a tiny device that plugs into your notebook’s USB port, but it stores away in the pointer itself when not in use. The Remote Control also has a built in laser pointer for pointing at things on the screen, again from across the room. It really is all you need to deliver an effective presentation. The device is on sale from Buy.com and you can get it for under $20 if you use the rebate. Shipping is free!

I’ve had an Xbox 360 for a couple of years now and love it to bit. However recently one of the buttons on my favourite controller has started playing it. It started working intermittently and now you really have to bang on it if you want something to happen. As you can image, it gets pretty hard to play games like that; is there anything I can do to get it fixed?

I’m glad you like your Xbox, there are quite a few games for it and it’s one of the better consoles on the market. Unfortunately repairs on the controller can be quite expensive. The big issue with repairing electronics is that the cost of labour is usually much higher than actually replacing the item; so buying a new controller may be the way to go.

For example, you may choose to go for the Xbox 360 Halo: Reach Wireless Controller. It features all the functionality of the award-winning Xbox Wireless controller, but comes in a stylish finish inspired by Halo: Reach. If you’re a big fan of Halo (.. and really .. who isn’t?) this may be just the ticket for you. It’s on sale from Buy.com for under $50, including shipping, and I’m sure it will be a great addition to your gaming rig.

Hi there. First of all, congratulations on your new phone. It’s a nice little device and there’s lots you can do with it. The signal strength on the phone is one of the things that has got a lot of media attention recently; especially as you can impact the strength by the way you hold your phone. There’s has been a recent update to the software on the phone to try and help with this, and this will come down to your phone automatically.

If you’re still having problem, one thing you can do is get a case for your phone. This protects the external antenna from external contact and may make your phone more reliable. It also serves to protect the phone from dumps and scratches, so it’s always a good idea. One such case is the iPhone 4 Air Case, currently on sale from Buy.com for under $7 (including shipping). It’s only 1mm thick and weighs 0.2oz which allows it to protect your phone without getting in the way. It’s not ugly and complements your phone, so check it out!

The webcam you choose really depends on what you’re after. Webcams are fairly similar in nature, but there are some differences, for example the newer models can capture HD video and have features that enable them to focus automatically on the subject in front of the camera.

So, I had a look at some different models, and if it were up to me, I would choose the Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 Webcam. It’s a cute little webcam that has all the more recent features, including the ability to take HD video. It has a microphone built in, so can be used for video conferencing and recording any video your want. I like the fact that it has autofocus too, which means that you don’t have to stay playing with focusing the camera, just concentrate on what you want to record.

You can get more value for your coupon with this item, because it’s currently on sale for around $30. It will work automatically with any instant messaging software, video manipulation software; and you can even use it to record a video for Facebook. Check it out.

We’re planning a long road trip and I’m looking for a way to let the kids watch a movie in the car. We used to have a portable DVD player which broke down, and I’m reluctant to buy a new one, because I’m pretty sure there’s a cheap digital way to do some watching. What do you recommend?

Interestingly, we still have a DVD player we cart around, but given a choice, I would go for a digital media player. My phone is pretty good at displaying video, but you can get devices with a bigger screen that lend themselves to the task at hand in a much better way.

One such device is the ViewSonic VPD400 4.3″ Portable MovieBook. It’s a Portable Entertainment Centre that’s currently on sale from Buy.com for $60. It’s a pocket-sized device that can play HD videos on it’s inbuilt screen, or even on an external TV if you wanted to. It has 8Gb of internal memory and also takes a Micro SDHC card. It supports a range of different formats and the internal battery lasts up to 12 hours if used for audio, or six hours if used for video.

It’s a great option if you can get one, and I’m sure your family will be thrilled to be able to play with this little gadget. Have a great road trip!

I remember the days of messing around with cables and trying to untangle mouse, webcam, power supply and whatever I had in my bag at the time. Things have got better since I’ve learnt to use my trackpad, but I do know that a number of people will always prefer a real mouse to sliding their finger around the keyboard.

So, what do I suggest in your case. Well, have a look at the Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000. Here are the reasons I recommend it. First of all, it’s an optical mouse; there are no moving parts so it’s less likely to breakdown and will work on most surfaces. It’s also wireless; which means that there are no wires for you to tangle up and have to untangle. And it has the nice touch that the wireless received fits right into the base of the mouse; which reduce the chance of your losing it. It’s currently on sale from Buy.com for around $17 which is quite a bargain. Go check it out.

I’m working with a company who is planning to mailshot a large number of clients. We’re looking for a label printer as we need to print some custom labels. We do have a few thousand customers, so we were looking for a heavy duty printer. Can you recommend anything?

The great thing about hardware today is that it’s relatively each to find pretty much anything you may be looking for. Label printers used to be a bit of a novelty, at least in the home market, and commercial printers used to be pretty expensive. Today you can find a mid range one that can do pretty much what you’re asking without breaking the bank.

One such model is the Brother QL-570 Thermal Label Printer. It’s a professional printer can can print up to 50 labels per minute, onto labels up to 2.4 inches in width. It can print up to 300×600 dpi, which means it can handle logos, fonts and even pictures without blinking an eye. It comes complete with software that lets you design your own labels and put whatever you want on them.

The label printer is currently on sale from Buy.com and retails for under $35. I don’t know how long that price is on for; so if you’re after one, go ahead and bag it today.
