I have Word 2003 on my computer and have an annoyance I was hoping you can help me with. Everytime I start entering a date, Word automatically completes it for me. Is there any way I can stop this?

I guess this is a good example of a computer trying too hard. And putting a voice changer on, pretending to be Darth Vader and telling it to stop just isn’t going to help (I hope you haven’t tried that). The easiest way to turn this automatic updating off is to disable AutoComplete in Word. Click on the Tools menu and then AutoCorrect Options. Click on the AutoText tab and then on the box labelled “Show AutoComplete suggestions” so that the tick disappears. Click on OK to save the changes.

There you go .. no more annoying AutoCompletes.

Having copied a web address into a Word document it has been formatted as a hyperlink. I have tried to remove this by right-clicking on the link but all I get are the spelling options.

Word does not combine the different menus that can be shown on a right-click even if more than one is relevant. The spelling menu takes priority over the hyperlink menu so either click on part of the web link that does not have a wavy red underline or select the Ignore All option in the menu. You may also have to ignore the grammer warning before the Remove hyperlink option is shown.

This can be useful if you’re writing documents and want to include a link to, say an apidexin scam site; you certainly don’t want a link to that. So it’s quite useful to have an option to show or hide the link.

Every time I open a saved document or create a new one in Word, there’s a grid sitting behind my texxt making it really hard to read – is there any way I can remove this?

I got this issue from someone who was trying to put together a I proposal for rv insurance and was going nuts trying to get rid of the pesky background he had always lived with. I think your problem may be that someone (or some application) has added a background to your default document template which is why it appears as soon as you try creating a new document. Here’s how you can edit the default template to remove it:

Click on the Start button and then click My Computer

Click on the Tools menu and then on Folder options.

Click on the View tab and then on the option “Show hidden files and folders”

Click OK and then close the Windows Explorer folder

Start Word, left click on File and then on Open

Select Document Templates in the Files Of Tyle meny at the bottom of the Open dialog box

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Double-click on Normal.dot to open it.

Click on the Format menu, Background and then No Fill

Save the changes and then close the template

There you go, you’re done. If you don’t want to see your hidden files any more, follow the first 4 steps again to untick that option.

I’ve just upgraded to Office 2007 and I can’t seem to find the Print button in Word. I know it’s a basic question, but I’ve checked each and every menu and just can’t find how to print. Help please.

This is not an uncommon question for someone upgrading to Office 2007. Microsoft has decided to move away from the standard toolbar view and instead is using something called the “Ribbon” which switched functionality based on where you are. I’m sure it’s a step in the right direction, but people can be quite confused if they come across this without any warning.

The biggest problem I’ve found is that a lot of useful functions are hidden under a special button on the far right of the menu. This gives access to functions like Loading, Saving and Printing Documents. If you click on this you’ll have access to your Print menu as per this screenshot:

So there, you have it. It doesn’t matter if you’re printing off Christmas dinner recipes or patterns for cool baby clothes; now you know exactly where to go.

I’m writing a book using Word 2003. The spellcheck is useful but Word doesn’t like my grammar and covers entire pages in wiggly green lines, even when I believe the sentences are perfectly constructed. It particularly dislike sentences with several clauses. Can I get rid of it?

Grammer checking can be particularly useful if you’re not confident of the way sentences are structured, however there are different styles of writing and the grammar checker doesn’t always pick them up. I remember some time back when I was trying to type the term “diet pills” and my grammer checker insisted that I couldn’t do this because “diet” was a verb not an adjective. The PC Support guys couldn’t really tell me why this was, so I just had to live with it.

Sometimes it’s just easier to turn the whole thing off and not bother about it, especially if you know exactly what you want to accomplish. Here’s what you do:

Click Tools

Click Spelling and Grammer

Click Options

Untick the box that says “Check grammar are you type”

Click OK

Click Cancel

This turns off the automatic checking for you. You can still run a check manually if you want, but at least you don’t have all the wiggly green lines to content with.

I’ve converted a document from Word to PDF and lost the Word document. Is there any way I can convert it back from PDF to Word?

I got this question from someone who was writing an Anoretix review as part of an assignment and was desperate to get their document back in Microsoft Word format.

Well, there are a couple of options for this. There are some packages you can buy or download that will do the trick for you. Amongst others I found Able2Doc (which has a free trial) and HelloPDF (which is free). However, as this is a one-off occurrence, I would go for a web based solution which will do the job quickly and cleanly. The service I’m going to use is FreePDFConvert.com, which has a free service which will convert documents up to 2 pages long.

Converting the document is as easy as filling in the following form:

Fill in the form by browsing to the document, specify a few options and supply your email address. Click Convert, give it a few minuts and you’ll have your new Word document in your mailbox. Pretty nifty huh?
