How do I backup WordPress?

How can I backup my WordPress blog?

I was joking with some friends the other day, how if we went on an extended holiday, there would be noone around to backup our blogs. It wouldn’t be so bad, except for the fact that we run blogs for other people and ideally they would be able to perform their own backups.

Now, if you look at the WordPress documention on how to take backups, it’s not as straight forward as it could be. You can also take backups by backing up MySQL, but most people I know would freak out if they found themselves at a command prompt!

This is where plugins come to the rescue. I came across a great plugin the other day called BackUpWordPress which, as the name suggests, is designed to help people take backups of WordPress. It has a great user interface and is extremely each to use. Here are some screenshots:

As you can see, it’s pretty comprehensive and I’ll be adding it to all the blogs I administer. That way if I go on an extended holiday, find myself in drug rehab or just get run over by a bus, I’ll know that at least my clients can take care of themselves. 🙂

  1. Yes it is very difficult to take back up of all your blog manually when you out of place and net is not available. in that situation this type of plugins become handy.
thanks for sharing, i will try it..

  2. Nice article. I also use BackupWordPress. What’s great is that you can schedule the backups to run automatically, and choose whether you want just a database backup (mysql), or a full backup (database files). This is available in the “Advanced” options menu but it’s actually quite easy to use.
