How do I request read receipts in Thunderbird?

I am using Thunderbird for my emails and would like to receive receipts when they are read but cannot find a plugin for this. Is it possible to receive them?

This is a very useful feature if you’re worried about email being lost in spam filters (this is easier then you think if your email has words like “Viagra” or “treatments for acne” in it). A return receipt sends an email back to you automatically when the recipient opens the message. Just keep in mind that it’s not infallible as most email programs give the recipient the opportunity to cancel the receipt.

Here’s what you do: When you create a new email in Thunderbird click on the Options menu and choose the Return Receipt option. This is what it looks like:

That’s all you need to do. When your email gets read, you should receive notification of this.

  1. He asked for a read Receipt that’s when it get’s read. The one thunderbird has is what usually called and delivery receipt and only tells you it got to the person inbox and not that it was read.

  2. Actually this answers the question at hand. When the email arrives in the inbox it requests the reader of the email to accept the request to send back the receipt or not, only then will an email be sent back to the original sender. Thus alerting you that the email has been read. So it does act as a “Read” receipt in that regard. You have to look at an email to initiate the receipt. It doesn’t have to simply arrive in the inbox.

  3. TM, the action you describe seem incorrect in the tests I’ve run with Thunderbird 3.0.2 and gmail email server. A receipt request is returned before I check the gmail account.
