I’ve noticed Facebook buttons start to appear on different websites, where I can select to Like something on the site. I’m a bit nervous about my information being shared around on different websites; can I get away from this?
This is one of the latest innovations that Facebook have brought to the web; the ability for websites owners to contribute to their Social Graph and use information from their social network. As you say though, this does have an impact on your privacy and luckily Facebook have given you the option to turn off the facility. Here’s what you do:
- Click on Account and choose Privacy Settings
- Click on Applications and Websites
- Choose Instant Personalization
- Untick the option that says “Allow select partners to instantly personalize their features with my public information when I first arrive on their websites.”
Just keep in mind that this option can be quite useful for you. I mean, you can go to a website offering life insurance quotes which can instantly know what sort of thing you could be looking for, without your having to fill in a form. This allows the website owner to personalise your experience. But, it’s really your choice whether you have this on or not; just make sure you know what you’re signing up for.
